By royal licence dated 1839 Robert John Smith, 2nd Baron Carrington, assumed the surname Carington in lieu of Smith. (Debrett's Peerage, 2015, p.220). Note: surname spelt Carington with one r, title spelt with 2 r's. Arms go with surname not title.
