English: A smart card is an electronic card in the physical format of a credit card or the like. Many TV channels, mainly commercial ones, can only be displayed when the viewer has a smart card for the respective TV channel/program (example: Sky), which needs to be inserted into a designated slot of the set-top-box (also: digital receiver) or TV set. Some set-top boxes have so called common interface modules built in or exchangeable, into which the smart card can be inserted. They can also be regarded as smart card readers.
