The quarterings were acquired in the 14th century when Sir William Sinclair of Rosslyn married Elisabeth/Isabel Sperra/Spar/Strathearn ("sometimes called Sperra" (Dict of Nat Biog, re Henry Sinclair[1]), a daughter of Malise V, Earl of Strathearn and Caithness, Jarl of Orkney (died c.1357) (Maol Íosa/"Malicias Spar") the last of the native Gaelic Earls of Strathearn (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.928). Their only son w:Henry I Sinclair, Earl of Orkney was made Jarl of Orkney in 1379 by King Hakon VI of Norway
