The Lakshmi Narayana group, sometimes spelled Laxmi Narian temples, are six 10th-century stone temples north of Chamba palace in Himachal Pradesh. They are arranged in a row from north to south, three for Vishnu and three for Shiva. The northernmost is dedicated to Lakshminarayana and the group is named after it. This group is attributed to Sahilavarman and these temples are the oldest surviving group of stone temples in Chamba.
The Lakshmi Narayana group is notable for several reasons. The statues of Lakshminarayana, Shiva and Ganesha are made from marble that was obtained in 10th century from the Vindhya range in Madhya Pradesh (over 1000 kilomters away). The temple has Hindu artwork that depict scenes of Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as Krishna leela – for example, Krishna playing flute under the Kadamba tree. The group also includes Vedic legends related artwork, such as the Samudra-manthan. The rivers goddesses Ganga on makara and Yamuna on tortoise flank the sanctum.
The complex has been the source of many copper plate grants over the centuries from different kings, reflecting its historic importance. These are now preserved at the Chamba museum. Additionally, the temple has historic inscriptions in early scripts that it received gifts from common people such as a barber named Gyana.
The six temples have a square plan and Nagara architecture. The six temples in the group are (north to south): Lakshminarayan temple, Radhakrishna temple, Chandragupta Mahadev temple, Gaurishankar temple, Tryambkeshavar temple, and Lakshmidamodar temple. The complex has several mandapas and smaller shrines such as one for Hanuman, Ganesha, Durga Mahisasuramardini, Nandi and others.
