The Second Cemetery of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue Shearith Israel at 72-76 West 11th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was established in 1805, when there was no more room in the First Cemetery at Chatham Square. The city took some of it by eminent domain in 1830, in order to widen 11th Street, which left the cemetery with this small triangular plot on the south side of 11th, and an even smaller and unusable plot on the north side. It is located within the Grenwich Village Historic District. (Source: NYCLPC Greenwich Village Historic District Designation Report vol. 1)
