The sarrusophone family was invented in 1856 by the French bandmaster Sarrus, as a louder replacement of oboes and bassoons in the wind band. They had a conical bore and used a double reed.
The family was parallel to the saxophones in pitch ranging form a straight soprano in B flat through to a contrabass in E flat. The main surviving instruments are the bass and contrabass models. ",
