Lock was a London-born self-taught miniature painted who travelled to Australia in 1837 where he was employed as an artist in the Government Survey Office, and is known to have visited Tasmania and the Pacific. He worked as a photographic painter on his return to England, later opened a studio for miniature painting on Regent Street, converting Talbotypes into miniatures. Christie's reference
