English: Robert John Curtis (1866-1877), was known for his portraits in Charleston, S.C., and he was advertising in the Charleston Courier since the early 1830s. His 1838 portrait of the Seminole Indian Chief Osceola was critically acclaimed and reproduced in lithograph form by Charleston engraver William Keenan (b. ca. 1810). Curtis was trained in Philadelphia under John Neagle (1796-1865).
