This is a tartan dating to at least 1815–1816, when the Highland Society solicited clan tartan from chiefs, and the chief of Clan Gregor supplied this one. It is still used today as one of several MacGregor clan tartans, and is the very simplest of them. It was named after Robert Roy MacGregor (Rob Roy), in 1850, but there is no evidence that he ever wore it. In various colours, it is also one of the most popular patterns for flannel and gingham used for shirts, bedding, etc. The Rob Roy sett is equal proportions of black and red, at any proportional size, and it is a normal, mirroring tartan.
