The title in the Quarto version (1597) is The Tragedie of Richard II; the title in the First Folio (1623) is The life and death of King Richard the Second.

Though probably not written in sequence, William Shakespeare's Histories trace many of the pivotal moments of the history of the British monarchy from the end of Richard II's reign through that of Henry IV, his successors Henry V and Henry VI, the War of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster, and finally the reign of Richard III, who was deposed by the founder of the Tudor monarchy, Henry VII (formerly the Earl of Richmond), to whom an ancestor of Shakespeare's rendered services remembered in the family's heraldic motto, Non sanz droict (not without right).
