Richard Gallsworthy (1826–1895) was born in Selby, North Yorkshire, England. He was head of Richard Gallsworthy and Sons, he was a hide and leather tanner and he was twice mayor of Leeds (1876 and 1877) but at some point moved to Beech Grove, Harrogate, and removed himself from civic life. His last residence was a house called Auricaria, Beech Grove. He was a Liberal, and a deacon of Harrogate Congregational Church. He was buried on 26 January 1895, and there was a large attendance at the funeral, including managers and employees from his company warehouses and tanyards at Sheffield, Epworth and Leeds, and his leather tanyard in Lincoln. Richard Gallsworthy's sister in law (widow of his brother John Gallsworthy) was Elizabeth Gallsworthy (died 1899), an alcoholic who was murdered while drunk, robbed, and dumped in a barn on the Isle of Man. Elizabeth Gallsworthy was buried in Selby.
