The Radical War of 1820 was a week of strikes and unrest, a culmination of Radical demands for reform in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland which followed on from the "Peterloo Massacre" of the previous year. On Monday 3 April there was a widespread strike, and a small group which marched towards the Carron Company to seize weapons was stopped at Bonnymuir. Prisoners were also taken from small group from Strathaven, and on 8 April militia taking these prisoners to Greenock jail, when confronted by locals, opened fire killing eight people. Leaders of the insurrection were executed or transported. In the aftermath, unemployed weavers were put to work on paving a track in Holyrood Park which became known as the Radical Road.
