British English: Royal Air Force Station Greenham Common, commonly abbreviated to RAF Greenham Common, is a former World War II and NATO Cold War airbase located on the border between Greenham and Crookham, 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Newbury in the English county of Berkshire and 45 miles (72 km) west of London. During World War II, it was used by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF), and during the Cold War by the United States Air Force (USAF) for Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers, and later for BGM-109G Gryphon Cruise missiles. Notable for the peace camp demonstrators during the 1980s for its housing of nuclear warheads, USAF subsequently removed all munitions, left the site, and it was closed in 1991. Since 2010, it has been a nature reserve managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust.
