English: The Provincetown Playhouse is an historic theatre at 133 MacDougal Street between West 3rd and West 4th Streets in the Greenwich Village neighhborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is named for the Provincetown Players, founded in 1915 - originally Eugene O’Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Djuna Barnes - who converted the former bottling plant into a theater in 1918, which was extensively renovated in 1940. The group's original theater, opened in 1916, was at 139 MacDougal Street. There has been controversy over whether the site, which is now owned by New York University, deserves to have landmark status.
