English: The Praça do Marquês de Pombal is the main square in the town of Vila Real de Santo António which has a focal point of an obelisk dedicated to King Joseph I. The Parish church is situated on the north side of the square. The square is paved with dragon's tooth paving and is bordered with Orange Trees. The other three sides of the square are flanced with three set of buildings identical in construction.
English: This square is named after 1st Marquis of Pombal who's name was Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo,1st Count of Oeiras (13 May 1699 – 8 May 1782) who was an 18 century Portuguese statesman. He was Secretary of the State of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves (the equivalent to a today's Prime Minister) in the government of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777.
