English: The Praça da República is at the heart of Albufeira old town. During the medieval period this square was an important area in the town in political, legal and social terms. Up until 1910 the square was called Praça de Armas (Square of Arms) and it was enclosed with the buildings that included the local council, the local prison, the pillory, Hospital and a travellers Inn. Today it is the location of the Municipal museum of archaeology and the Conservatório de Albufeira. There are also preserved remains of Albufeira Castle.
