The Potato Festivals in the north of the contemporary Ghana (and also in other West African savannah areas) belong to the annual regional harvest celebrations relating to the there main food source and are as such a cultural highlight in the villages and towns of the region. Especially in the northern areas of Ghana is playing the vitamin-rich root tuber of the plant "Orange flesh sweet potato" (= English for a sub-species of Ipomoea batatas from the plant family of the Convolvulaceae) an important role at the nutrition and the health care of the population, especially at pregnant women and children, but also for all others. The native name of this potato in Northern Ghana is "Alaafei Wuljo".
