Port a' Chotain, located on the coast of north Islay, is one of the few inlets that do not front much of a sandy beach. Before the tràigh is an unnavigable reef. Most of the original port in geologic time, however, is now a raised and grassy beach, delineated by the bluffs of the former coastline. A settlement there, Aonan na h-Uamha Mòire, has long been abandoned and is now an archaeological site. Across the raised beach flows the Allt na h-Uamha Mhòire on its way to the reef.
