This mass path led across a field called "Phelan's Paddock" (now - 2023 - "Kerr's Paddock") through the subtownland of Poll Bán (English spelling Poulbawn). It is marked as a foot path on the old Ordnance Survey maps and mentioned in the School's Collection[1]. There is a local story of a former landowner who blocked up the access to the mass path. Shortly after, his daughter who was only in her 20s died suddenly. The locals attributed the blocking up of the mass path to her death.[2]
The field name Phelan's Paddock might be after a family Whelan/ Phelan who lived on Bohercrusha/ Bohercrussia, according to the 1901[3] and 1911[4] census. There is a cottage marked near the exit of the mass path on old Ordnance Survey maps which might have been the Phelan/ Whelan home.
