Plucked fiddles predated the rise of the citole, according to Ephraim Segerman. They could resemble the the citole but did not have the instrument's wing projections at the top, but instead had rounded corners.[1] As citoles could resemble a guitar, except for the wing projections, the plucked fiddles could also resemble guitars.
