The Hudson Heights neighborhood sits on top of a hill which is separated from the Washington Heights neighborhood it is part of by a steep ridge which prevents most cross streets from passing through. Nevertheless, there are a number of pedestrian connections between them: on the east of Hudson Heights, both the 190th and 181st Street subway stations have connecting tunnels, which can be reached by elevator; and a long set of outdoor stairs connects two sections of West 187th Street between Overlook Terrace and Fort Washington Avenue. On the south end of Hudson Heights, both Cabrini Boulevard and Fort Washington Avenue go through to West 181st Street, but Pinehurst Avenue, located between them, stops short, and connects to 181st with a smaller set of stairs. Pinehurst then continues south from there.
