English: Common Pheasant Phasianus colchicus was introduced from Asia to Europe as a hunting quarry in Roman times or earlier, with birds escaping and breeding ferally by the middle ages or earlier. They are now widespread as an invasive species throughout most of Europe. Further introductions in the 18th-19th centuries gave rise to feral populations widely in North America, and more locally in Australasia and South America. The original Roman introductions were of the Georgian subspecies Phasianus colchicus colchicus, but subsequently, Phasianus colchicus torquatus and other subspecies from China have been widely introduced. Feral populations now consist of a mixture of subspecies interbreeding freely.
