English: Pedestrian fences are fences that are used to prevent pedestrians (and sometimes cyclists) from crossing the road. This is usually undertaken for safety reasons, where the width and the speeds on a road make crossing too dangerous in the eyes of the transport authorities. Sometimes it is also done to explicitly "channel" pedestrians to official crossing spots.
Pedestrian fencing is not without critics, because it severely limits the choice of pedestrians (even during times when the road is quiet), encourages higher driving speeds (because drivers on the road assume they do not have to watch the footpaths) and is considered unsightly by some. It's use especially in urban areas has therefore become less preferred.
