English: The Peace Garden was established near the front doors of Toronto City Hall in 1984. The eternal flame was lit on 14 September 1984 by Pope John Paul II using an ember from the Memorial for Peace in Hiroshima. It was officially dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on 2 October 1984. It was closed in 2010 during renovations at Nathan Philips Square, at which time it was moved to the west side of the square. It was rededicated on 18 May 2016.
