Oliver Belmont graduated from the USNA in 1881. There is considerable confusion in the sources about how long he matriculated, whether he graduated, and how and when he left. Certain answers are given in the Annual Register of the United States Naval Academy for 1877-1878 and again for 1880-1881. In both registers he is stated to have been admitted in 1874 at age 14 years, 10 months. At that time he was attending secondary school at St. Paul's, New Hampshire. Admission was clearly well in advance of attendance. The registers record a four-year program of classes fourth through first. Oliver started his third-class year in 1877 and his first-class year in 1880. He graduated 59th in "Order of Merit" out of a class of 62 and appears to have been a perfectly ordinary midshipman. These scores do not necessarily reflect the later careers of the midshipmen, as some of the best officers were near or at the bottom. Belmont apparently resigned in 1881, which means that he had no obligation of active duty or reserve. He was free to pursue the life of a scion of one of the wealthiest families in America. This included social whirls, horse racing, and construction of a palatial mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. In the last years of his life he decided to run for Congress. When asked why, he replied that he might just as well, as he had nothing else to do.
