Media relating to the former New Orleans Parish Prison on the square bounded by Orleans, St. Ann, Marais, and Treme Streets, in the Treme neighborhood. The land for the prison was purchased by the City in 1831; it was formerly occupied by a soap factory. Construction began in 1832 and was completed in 1836, from design by Joseph H. Pilié and A. Voilquin. The newer Parish Prison in the Central Business District replacing it opened in 1894, but this old prison was not completely demolished until 1939.
