This monument honors Brevet Major Edmund A. Ogden (1811–1855), who oversaw the initial planning and construction of Fort Riley. He was one of some 70 people who died there in a cholera epidemic in the summer of 1855. A stone obelisk placed as a permanent memorial to Ogden was soon erroneously regarded as a marker for the geographical center of the United States.
