Category:Offshore Sail Training Squadron
The Offshore Sail Training Squadron is made available to midshipman who are interested in learning more about sailing. Every midshipman is taught basic sailing in small boats. The Offshore squadron comprises a fleet of 44-foot sloops for use in coastal waters. A sloop also features an engine for close-in maneuverability. It has an electronic navigational system. The USNA began to acquire the sloops in 1988 to replace the previous fleet of 44-foot yawls more familiar to older alumni. The latter had no engine or navigational system beyond charts and hand instruments. The yawls were sold off to help pay for the sloops.
