English: The 600-series was the upper-tier line of second-generation Nakamichi decks, positioned above the 400- and 500-series and below the halo 1000ZXL and 700ZXL. In 1979 the company released models 660ZX, 670ZX, 680 and 680ZX. All shared the same exterior enclosure, same appearance and control layout which became Nakamichi's corporate style until the end of the cassette era. The sculpted, slanted tape transport keys and the battery of horizontal toggle switches at extreme right first appeared in the 1979 600-series models and were later carried over to the ZX, BX, RX and CR series. The 660ZX was the first "affordable" (list price 995 USD [1]) deck with auto azimuth alignment. This, however, was not a continuous servo as in the 1982 Dragon. "Auto azimuth" procedure of the 660ZX meant zeroing of the relative recording-to-playback azimuth difference prior to recording, and had no effect on playback. The 680 was a double-speed deck; while Dual and others makers of double-speed decks preferred faster speed (9.5 cm/s), Nakamichi added half-speed of merely 2.4 cm/s. And it somehow worked.
After the introduction of Dolby C in 1981 Nakamichi expanded the line with models 681ZX and 682ZX, adding Dolby C. The whole line of 600-series was soon discontinued and replaced with the third-generation models ZX-7 and ZX-9.
