Murano beads (or Venetian beads) are colorful glass beads made on the island of Murano, which is located close to the city of Venice, or in the historical center of Venice, by local glass artists or artisans according to old traditional methods using glass rods also produced on Murano. These beads are being produced on Murano continuously from the 14th century. There are three kinds of Murano beads: seed beads (Conterie), Chevron beads (Rosette) mostly used as trade beads, and lampworked beads (for example: Millefiori, Sommerso, Fiorato – the last ones are called in English "wedding cake beads"). The beads are appreciated for their hardness and beauty, and used to make jewelry. The art and the know-how of making Murano/Venetian and French glass beads were acknowledged by UNESCO in 2020.
