Mother coins or seed coins were cash coins that served as a model for other cash coins to be cast out of, most mints had a single mother coin from which all other coins with that inscription would be cast to keep the cash coins that entered circulation consistent in design and size, these coins were later produced from ancestor coins which were the original design for most cash coins.
