Monarch of the Plains (1967) by Pete Felten is a centennial monument to the American bison, the Plains Indians, and the founding of Fort Hays and Hays City in 1867. Installed on the grounds of Old Fort Hays, the sculpture overlooks Frontier Historical Park, enclosure of live bison, Fort Hays State University, and Hays.

The buffalo was carved from a 45 ton piece of Indiana Limestone.[1]

The pedestal is constructed from sawed blocks of two-tone Fencepost limestone. Set in the pedestal are three bas-relief sculptures of 1867 frontier themes and a commemorative plaque, all carved into Fencepost limestone.
