Merle is a non-official term for cat coats characterised by irregularly shaped patches of diluted pigment and non-diluted colour. This can be non-dilute patches on a dilute colour, or to non-silver patches on a smoke, tipped/chinchilla or shaded silver cat. For silver/smoke cats it occurs in coats where some patches lack the silver undercoat. There is no clearly identified gene (yet) and the effect appears to be cosmetic only.
