Letters have fallen off this monument, and the grass has grown over part of the inscription. As far as can be seen from the photographs, the inscription on this monument says:

  • "In loving memory of Pte Silas Harris Jennings no. 38950 25th N. Fusiliers. Killed in action in France 28th April 1917 in his 24th year. Also James Amies(on?) Bert Jennings, son of the above, [?] 18th Oct 1922".

Notes: A search of the GRO index gives a clue to the age and identity of the child memorialised on the monument. Silas H. Jennings married Catherine Hegarty in 1914, and they had a son James A. Jennings later that year. Silas died aged 23 in France in 1917, and the child died aged 7 in 1922. (Sources: GRO index: Marriages Jun 1914 Jennings Silas H. and Catherine Hegarty Knaresbro 9a 242. Births Dec 1914 Jennings James A. mother Hegerty Knaresbro 9a 166. Deaths Dec 1922 Jennings James A. age7 Knaresbro' 9a 118.)
