Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway was one of the earliest railways in the young post-revolution United States, founded by the 'Old Company', the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company (LC&N), successor to the 'Lehigh Coal Mine Company' to service it's mine begun in 1788 in Summit Hill, Pennsylvania (see on this map). The lands were still being mined in July 2013 by the 'New Company' Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, successor to both.
