English: Matthew Joseph Steffens (1854-1928), also known as Matthew J. Steffens and M. J. Steffens, American photographer active in Chicago in 1870-1915 where he ran the Steffens Photo Studio. Born at Hontheim, Germany June 10, 1852, the son of Jacob and Christine (Thullen) Steffens. Arrived in Chicago in 1867 as a young orphan. Worked as a painter at the Pullman Palace Car Company shops in Chicago and Detroit. In 1870s, he opened a daguerreotype studio on Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago; in 1886, he moved it to 22nd St. east of Prairie Avenue and added a gallery. Became a prominent Chicago society photographer. Patented an Aerial Photographic Apparatus in 1887.
