Category:Matthew Gay Building
Built in 1899, this Queen Anne-style flatiron building at 304 State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was constructed for Matthew Gay. The building features a corner cylindrical turret with a conical roof, decorative relief panels, and a decorative cornice, painted brick exterior with a parapet enclosing a low-slope roof, one-over-one double-hung windows, an oriel window on the State Street facade, brick corbeling, a first floor retail shopfront with replacement storefronts and cast iron columns, and rusticated stone trim, including sills and lintels.
The building is one of many commercial and mixed-use buildings that contribute to the vibrant State Street corridor that runs between the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus and Capitol Square.
