The new 5,000 capacity mosque at the Marmara University Faculty of Theology was officially opened on Friday, October 23, 2015 by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. It replaces a mosque that was demolished in 2012 because of earthquake risks. The mosque has a rather peculiar architecture if compared to the typical Turkish mosque. The design of its dome was inspired by a nautilus shell and is integrated with a dovetail ceiling technique that was common in old wooden houses in Turkey.
