Mahua – sometimes spelled as Mahuwa or Mahuā – is a village in north Madhya Pradesh. It is about a kilometer south of the historic Terahi temples and Hindu monastery. The modern era Mahua is likely the ancient Madhumati mentioned in inscriptions and Shaiva Siddhanta texts of Hinduism.
Mahua is famous for important monuments from the 1st millennium, of which three are exemplary examples of Hindu temple architecture – Mahua Shiva temple 1 (Mahua mandapika, the oldest known monolithic mandapika in India), Mahua Shiva temple 2 (Mahua Nagara-style temple, one of the notable 64-square plan implementation of Vastupurushamandala as documented in ancient Brihat Samhita text), and Kherapati mandir (a Valabhi-style temple with one of the most notable statues of Chamunda goddess in India). The village has ruins of other monuments, but they are a chaotic pile of lost temples.
