The M. S. Young Hardware Company at 736-740 Hamilton was founded before the Civil War in 1843, the company moved to that location beginning in 1873.

M.S. Young began selling grease to wagon owners in Northampton Towne before the Civil War, expanding into various hardware products, farm equipment, tools, and any kind of product we consider hardware today. It also was an early automobile and truck facility, selling tires and parts for vehicle owners in the 1910s and 1920s. It also sold Victrolas and Edison phonographs and early radios. When M. S. Young closed in April 1964, it was the oldest private business in Allentown, serving the public for 119 years. Since the company closed its building has been used for many small stores and shops.

In 1926, the M.S. Young Company built the four-story building that remains today. Its unique architecture will be lost when it's torn down in the next few weeks.
