Category:Lygaeus simulans
NOTE: The animals historically referred to as Lygaeus equestris are actually members of two different (almost cryptic) species: Lygaues equestris and Lygaeus simulans that can be clearly separated by the male genitalia or by very good (sharp & big) macro images of the hairs on the scutellum or the exact shape of the antennae pedestals. Nymphs can be separated somewhat more reliably (but not always/totally) based on colour characters. Both species can occur sympatrically over a large section of their range(s).
It is NOT usually possible to separate the two from average photos or based on range/location alone - when in doubt categorize as category:Lygaeus equestris\simulans.
Reason: Lygaeus simulans is a synonym of Lygaeus equestris\simulans
