English: The National Railway Museum in York has a covered preparation bay 53°57′38.73″N 1°5′43.53″W / 53.9607583°N 1.095425°W / 53.9607583; -1.095425 where locomotives can be serviced between mainline trips, being connected to the East Coast Main Line via the museum's mainline connection.

The bay is located alongside the building that houses the Warehouse/Workshop, which itself adjoins the larger and higher Great Hall building. Specifically, the bay is aligned in a north/south direction, alongside the eastern edge of the warehouse area (which is open to the public). While it's walled off from it, visitors in the warehouse can view inside the bay via windows in its west walls and a roller shutter door in the south wall, that continued the track into the warehouse.

The bay is open to the elements with only half of the eastern side walled in, but it has a roof over its full length. It has an inspection pit inside and ventilation extraction ductwork above the covered portion, with a water tower situated right outside it.

The entrance track to the bay enters from the north, the furthest east of the other tracks that allow wail access to the Warehouse (three tracks), the Workshops (single track which separates into three inside the Great Hall), and the Great Hall turntable (into the front facade of the hall). As well as the track inside the bay, the track outside it 53°57′39.24″N 1°5′44.25″W / 53.9609°N 1.095625°W / 53.9609; -1.095625 runs for about a single locomotive's length before it merges with the other tracks feeding the warehouse alongside. All of these tracks, the entrance and half open side of the bay, and the water tower, are all visible from passing trains travelling on the ECML to the north of York railway station (ie out of the west facing windows on the train).

The bay is completely separate from the museum's workshops which also have inspection pits, but which are to the south of the bay on the other side of the Warehouse.
