English: This protected area comprises the wetlands bordering the north Aegean Sea along what anciently was the coast of Thrace. The land has been extended by infilling. Barrier islands, spits, and bars have enclosed two types of bodies of water by human standards: lakes (limnes) and lagoons (Limnothalasses), which are mainly listed in the title of the protected area. Some settlements bear the names of the bodies of water or vice versa.
