The Kottukal Cave temple is a pre-8th century rock-cut Hindu monument. It consists of two east facing caves excavated from a granite outcrop. The smaller one is just a cell with a porch with a historic Hanuman relief. The other has an impressive four-sided sanctum, an ardhamandapa and pillared mandapa. Both caves have a Nandi in front, and are dedicated to Shiva.
The Kottukal caves are difficult to precisely date. Estimates generally place them in 7th to 8th century, with some scholars suggesting 6th century.
