Kirkstall Goit is a channel that diverts water from the River Aire, flowing under the building to re-join the river. In its old days as Burley Mills, it may have provided water power for the mill. These days it doesn't carry much water, but it evidently carried more water in the past, as can be seen in the aerial photo from the 1930's
