Kharod is a historic town in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh. The town is mentioned as Indrapur and Kharod in 6th to 13th century copper plates and inscriptions found here and nearby regions of Chhattisgarh. Many of these mention gifts of support, construction and repairs of matha (monasteries), vidyashalas (education centers), as well as Hindu and Jain temples. The temples and monastery structures from 6th to 12th century have survived in ruined form into the modern era. During the medieval era, the number of temples and their pilgrimage significance was so high that Kharod is referred to as the "Kashi of Chhattisgarh".

Kharod is close to the north bank of Mahanadi river, well connected to the rest of the state with highways 130B, 9 and 13. It is a part of the agriculturally most prosperous district of Chhattisgarh.
