English: The compound has 15 khalwas (spiritual retreats). These chambers – ḥujra (حجرة), ʾōḍa (أوضة) or oda (Ottoman: اوطه) – surround the Dome of the Rock terrace. Almost all have the same design: an upper floor facing the platform and a lower floor facing the opposite direction (with the floors being unconnected from the inside).^[1]
