A major regional capital before the 13th-century, Karitalai and Karanpur are now two adjacent villages about 50 kilometers northeast of Katni. They contain numerous sites with ruins of many lost Hindu and Jain temples. Of these, four sites are of particular significance: the 11th to 12th century Vishnu Varaha temple of Karanpur (the largest surviving site), Gupta era beheaded statues of Matsya and Kurma at the entrance of village school in Karitalai, 9th to 12th century temple parts reused in the ghats of the Karitalai pokhara (water tank) and the artwork found in the Kali temple of Karitalai.
This site is also referred to as Karnapura or Karnpur in some survey reports (e.g. Report Of A Tour In The Central Provinces In 1873-74 and 1874-75).
