Josephine Giraldelli was an early 19th-century travelling artist who went around Europe with her "fire resistance" trick. She would stand on hot plates, put hot lead in her mouth, let candles burn her arms etc. and remain unharmed. She was called "the English salamander" (although the account states she might be from Italy, looking at her name). A book with the description of her performance.
