English: Joseph Richardson, Jr. (December 4, 1752 – March 11, 1831), a noted third-generation American silversmith, designer and engraver coming from an old Quaker family. Son of Philadelphia leading silversmith Joseph Richardson, Sr. (1711-1784) and grandson of noted silversmith, Francis Richardson II (November 25, 1684, New York City - August 17, 1729, Philadelphia). Was in partnership with his brother, Nathaniel Richardson, from 1785 to 1791 in the firm of Joseph & Nathaniel Richardson. Later, he formed a partnership with James Howell as Richardson & Co. Joseph Richardson Jr. assisted his father in the Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians by Pacific Measures (1756). Produced some of the 1793 and all of the 1795 Washington Indian Peace Medals. On December 12, 1795, George Washington appointed Joseph Richardson, Jr. Assayer of the United States Mint; he thus became the second appointed assayer in the history of the U.S. Mint where he held office for thirty-five years. His son, John Richardson, was appointed assayer March 31, 1831, but resigned after first year becoming a book dealer in Philadelphia.
